Indian Student Visa from Bangladesh: 2026 Guide

Planning to study in India? Here is everything you need to know about the student visa process as a Bangladeshi national — straightforward, no fluff.

The Basics

The Indian Student (S) Visa is issued free of charge for Bangladeshi nationals under the bilateral agreement between Bangladesh and India. You only pay the IVAC service fee of BDT 1,500 (raised from BDT 600–700 in August 2025).

There is no fixed minimum bank balance required — unlike Canada or the UK. India’s financial requirement is based on whether your sponsor can plausibly cover your tuition and living costs.

Note: If you hold a confirmed government scholarship (such as ICCR), that letter serves as your financial proof — no additional bank documents required.

Where to Submit (IVAC Centres, Early 2026)

Step-by-Step: Submitting Your Application

1. Create your account on the official IVAC India–Bangladesh portal (linked from ivacindia.com). Use an email address and phone number you will still be monitoring six months from now — every update arrives there.
2. Fill the online form exactly as your passport reads, including middle names. A name that does not match the passport word-for-word is one of the most common reasons documents get returned.
3. Upload clear scans of every document. Photos of documents taken at an angle with the edges cut off are rejected at submission — rescan properly the first time and save yourself a second trip.
4. Pay the BDT 1,500 service fee online and keep the receipt. The visa itself is free for Bangladeshi nationals, so any request for a separate “visa fee” outside this receipt is a red flag.
5. Book or walk in, per the table above. Gulshan, Motijheel, Dhanmondi (09:00–10:00 AM) and Khulna accept walk-ins; Rajshahi and Sylhet require appointments. Carry originals and your booking confirmation.
6. Submit and track with your reference number. Status is checkable on the same portal; typical movement from submitted to processed is 7–14 calendar days, longer around Eid and Durga Puja.
7. Collect or have it couriered. Centre collection is fastest; courier to your address adds a few days but saves a return trip to Dhaka.

If the office raises a query, respond inside the stated window. Documents requested twice and never supplied are treated as abandonment far more often than as clarification.

Processing Time

Apply at least 3 weeks before your intended travel date. Student visa scrutiny is higher than tourist or medical visas — do not leave it to the last minute.

e-Student Visa vs IVAC: Which Route to Use

The e-Student Visa through the Study in India portal is dramatically faster (24–78 hours vs 7–14 days), but it requires the university to be onboarded on the portal and your admission to be verified digitally. Ask your university’s international office which route they support before you pay IVAC.

One caution: no speed matters if your admission letter is weak. Conditional letters and letters from institutions the High Commission does not recognise are rejected regardless of which channel you use.

Common Rejection Reasons

Most rejections are avoidable. The most frequent causes:

• Incomplete documents — missing bank statement pages, unsigned forms, wrong photo size
• Inconsistent financial story — sudden large cash deposits; account opened just before applying
• Weak admission letter — conditional letters or letters from unrecognised institutions
• Unclear study rationale — chosen course doesn’t match academic background
• Security/administrative delays — fully outside your control; rare, but happened during the 2024 protests

If You Get a Verification Call

Most applications are decided on the documents alone. Where finances or admission are not straightforward — or where the file was flagged during processing — an officer may place a short verification call to you, your sponsor or your university’s international office. Typical questions:

• What is the course name, duration and university address?
• Who is funding you, and what does that sponsor do for a living?
• Why India rather than Malaysia or Europe for this program?
• What will you do after graduating?

The rule is simple: your answers must match your documents. If your sponsor’s solvency letter says a business owner, do not improvise a different story on the call. Rehearse the basics once with whoever will answer alongside you, keep your phone reachable for the week after submission, and answer plainly — officers are checking for consistency, not fluency in English.

After You Arrive: FRRO Registration

If your visa is valid for more than 180 days, you must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) after arrival.

• Deadline: Within 14 days of arrival for most nationalities
• Bangladeshi students: Some official sources mention a 24-hour window — check your visa sticker. If it says 24 hours, that is binding.
• How: Entirely online at frro.gov.in — no office visit required in most cases
• What you need: Passport, visa page, arrival stamp, university bonafide letter, proof of address in India (hostel letter, etc.)

Missing the FRRO deadline results in fines and can complicate future visa extensions.

Extensions and Changes While You Are in India

Your visa has an expiry date tied to your program, but real timelines slip. If your course runs longer than the visa’s validity — thesis delays, semester backlogs, a program that extends by design — apply for an extension through the e-FRRO portal well before expiry rather than after it; approvals granted after a lapse are harder and come with overstay penalties.

Two other situations need prior approval, not after-the-fact improvisation:

• Changing institution or course requires FRRO permission (and typically a letter from both institutions) before you move. Enrolling somewhere new without approval can invalidate your visa.
• Changing your address or hostel should be updated in the FRRO record, since your registration is tied to where you live.
