Real Living Cost Abroad: India, Canada, UK (2026)

Monthly living costs for Bangladeshi students in India, Canada and the UK — survival budgets, hidden costs and the halal food price gap.

  • Free forever — no agency fee
  • Every figure cites an official source
  • We never handle your money

University brochures almost always understate living costs. This guide gives you the real monthly numbers — not marketing figures — so you can plan your budget honestly before choosing a destination.

Why Official Figures Are Misleading

CountryWhat they advertiseWhat research shows
India₹10,000–15,000/month₹17,100 minimum (survival)
CanadaCAD 10,000/yearCAD 20,635/year (updated official benchmark)
UK£977/month (maintenance)£1,104/month average actual spend

Universities understate costs because it attracts more applicants. Use the figures below for your own planning.

Monthly Living Costs: Survival vs Realistic

These two scenarios are modelled for each destination:

  • Survival — cheapest shared housing, home-cooked basic meals, minimal transport, no extras
  • Realistic — livable shared room, balanced meals with occasional eating out, regular local transport

🇮🇳 India (Greater Noida / Bangalore)

Greater Noida and Bangalore are the two most common destinations for Bangladeshi students in India.

Survival₹7,500₹8,500₹800~₹17,100
Realistic₹11,000₹10,500₹1,200 + ₹1,300~₹25,000

“Hidden fees” includes the UHIP health insurance (C$86–C$186/month) that most brochures don’t mention upfront.

The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) must be paid upfront at visa time — approximately £776/year (≈BDT 1 lakh), equivalent to £65/month of hidden cost.

The Halal Diet Price Gap

For Bangladeshi students who rely on rice, lentils, fish, and halal meat, the cost of maintaining that diet varies sharply by destination.

DestinationHalal food availabilityCost vs. eating in Dhaka
IndiaWidely available; Bengali fish markets in many metrosSimilar to home
UKGood in enclaves (e.g. East London)~2.5× more expensive
CanadaGood in GTA (Scarborough, Brampton)~3× more expensive

Example: 1 kg of white rice costs under BDT 80 in Dhaka. In Toronto it costs around BDT 415. Multiply that across your full diet for every month of your degree.

This is a genuine cost factor that most study-abroad guides ignore.

Hidden and One-Off Costs Nobody Puts in a Brochure

The monthly tables above cover recurring spend. Your first year also carries one-off and irregular costs that arrive whether you budgeted for them or not:

One-off / irregular costIndia (approx.)Canada (approx.)UK (approx.)
Housing deposit1–2 months’ rent1 month + key money4–6 weeks’ rent
Bedding, kitchenware, basics₹6,000–10,000C$300–600£150–400

Textbooks and lab kits (per year)₹3,000–8,000C$500–1,000£300–700

Health cover paid upfrontOften included in feesUHIP C$86–186/monthIHS £776 at visa time

Plan for 8–12% on top of your first year’s living budget to absorb this category. Two line items deserve special attention:

  • Flights home. One trip back for Eid or a family event costs more than a month of survival-mode living in India, and several times that from Canada. Budget one return flight per year — not one per holiday.
  • Deposits and setup. Landlords and residence halls collect deposit money before you get a key, and the first fortnight’s shopping — mattress, blanket, cooker, utensils — runs higher than anyone expects. Keep this cash accessible rather than locked in a fixed deposit.

Remittance costs quietly add up

Every rupee, pound or dollar your family sends carries a transfer fee — typically 1–4% depending on the channel — plus an exchange-rate margin. Compare the delivered amount (rate plus fee), not the advertised fee alone, and prefer bank transfer or licensed remittance services over informal channels. Finally, hold a 5–10% currency buffer in your budget: the taka moves against the CAD and GBP over a four-year degree, and a budget calculated at today’s rate will drift.

Can Part-Time Work Cover Your Costs?

A common belief is that part-time work in Canada or the UK will offset living expenses. The reality, based on the legal hour limits:

CountryLegal work limitMax monthly incomeTypical monthly deficit
Canada24 hrs/week≈C$1,500C$300–600 shortfall (typical hours are lower)
UK (non-London)20 hrs/week≈£1,000£200–400 shortfall
UK (London)20 hrs/week≈£1,000£400–800 shortfall
India0 hrs/week (not permitted)₹0Must rely on family or scholarship

Part-time work helps reduce costs but does not eliminate the need for family funding or loans in any of these destinations. Budget honestly from the start.

Worked Example: The First 90 Days in Greater Noida

Numbers are easier to trust when you see them land. Take a Bangladeshi student arriving in Greater Noida for a master’s program on the realistic budget from the table above:

WhenWhat you payAmount (approx.)
Before departureVisa + IVAC service feeBDT 1,500
Week 1Deposit + first month’s rent₹22,000
Week 1Bedding, kitchen setup, SIM₹9,000
Month 1Living costs (realistic)₹25,000
Months 2–3Living costs × 2₹50,000
BufferOne-off purchases, travel, surprises₹8,000

That is roughly ₹1,14,000 of ready cash (≈ BDT 1.6 lakh at 1 INR ≈ 1.4 BDT) for the first 90 days — before a single rupee of tuition. Students who arrive with only the first month’s rent in hand run out of money in week three, because the deposit, the bedding and the transport card all land together.

Run the same exercise in the two more expensive destinations: the GTA needs roughly CAD 4,500–5,500 (≈ BDT 3.5 lakh) for 90 days, and Birmingham roughly £2,800–3,500 (≈ BDT 4 lakh). Do this calculation for your own city before you commit — or before you pay an agent anything.

One Caution: Averages Hide Your City

Every figure here models one representative city per country — Greater Noida, Brampton, Birmingham — not a promise about yours:

  • Capital-city centres run above these numbers. Central Delhi, downtown Toronto and central London can add 20–40% to rent alone.
  • Campus towns run below. Smaller university cities with hostel or dormitory options come in under the realistic figures, sometimes close to survival mode.
  • Your program’s calendar matters. Degrees with long lab or clinical blocks leave less room for the part-time hours these budgets assume.

Before you lock a budget, price your actual city. Start with the university’s hostel rates — published, and usually the cheapest verified number you will get — then compare two or three room listings near campus, then ask a Bangladeshi student association what they actually pay. A budget built from someone else’s city is still a guess.

How to Use This

  1. Decide your destination and city
  2. Add realistic living costs (use the figures above, not brochure figures)
  3. Add your program’s annual tuition
  4. Calculate how many years your family can fund that total
  5. Check whether any scholarship reduces the tuition burden

A study plan built on honest numbers is far more likely to succeed than one built on marketing estimates.

Where to Use These Numbers

This article covers living costs only — tuition is the other half of the decision. Once you have a monthly figure you trust:

  1. If India is the front-runner, compare tuition across the featured Indian universities and check whether ICCR funding covers your program.
  2. If the total four-year cost still decides, move to the full India vs Canada vs UK cost comparison, which adds tuition and visa costs to these living figures.
  3. If cash before departure is the binding constraint, the cheapest-country ranking sorts every destination by upfront money needed.
  4. If you are still choosing between destinations, the destinations comparison puts all eight side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the realistic monthly living cost for a Bangladeshi student in India?
About ₹25,000 per month on a realistic budget (roughly ₹11,000 rent, ₹10,500 food, ₹2,500 transport and other costs) in Greater Noida or Bangalore — around BDT 25,000/month, or BDT 3–4 lakh per year. A survival budget can go as low as ₹17,100/month.
Why are university brochure living-cost figures always lower?
Universities advertise the cheapest possible scenario — shared housing at ₹10,000–15,000/month, CAD 10,000/year, £977/month maintenance — because lower published costs attract more applicants. Actual research puts India's survival minimum at ₹17,100/month, Canada's official benchmark at CAD 20,635/year, and UK average spend at £1,104/month.
How much does halal food add to my budget abroad?
In India, groceries for a Bengali diet cost about the same as home. In the UK they are roughly 2.5× Dhaka prices, and in Canada about 3× — 1 kg of white rice is under BDT 80 in Dhaka but around BDT 415 in Toronto. Across a full diet for every month of your degree, this gap is significant and most guides ignore it.
Does part-time work cover my living costs?
It helps but does not eliminate the gap. With legal limits of 24 hours/week in Canada and 20 hours/week in the UK, maximum monthly income is about C$1,500 or £1,000 — leaving a typical deficit of C$300–600 (Canada) or £200–800 (UK, worst case London). India permits no part-time work at all.
Are these figures inclusive of tuition?
No. Everything here is living cost only. Tuition is separate and varies by institution and program — India runs about BDT 8–25 lakh total over 4 years versus BDT 56–84 lakh in Canada and BDT 42–70 lakh in the UK. See the full 4-year cost comparison for tuition plus living together.
