Study in Lithuania from Bangladesh
Lithuania has the lowest average tuition in the European Union and roughly 200 English-taught master's programmes, which makes it the cheapest serious EU degree available to a Bangladeshi family. The obstacle is administrative, not academic: there is no Lithuanian embassy in Bangladesh, and the apostille on your certificates is not accepted there.

Can a Bangladeshi student afford to study in Lithuania?
Yes — Lithuania carries the EU's lowest average tuition: from €1,300 a year for a bachelor's degree and from €2,300 a year for a master's, with about 200 English-taught master's programmes and student living costs of roughly €500–700 a month in Vilnius and Kaunas. Two Bangladesh-specific rules decide whether your file succeeds. First, there is no Lithuanian embassy in Bangladesh, so the national D visa and the temporary residence permit are both processed through the Embassy of Lithuania in New Delhi, with VFS Global handling submissions in India — which in practice means obtaining an Indian visa first. Second, do not assume a Bangladeshi apostille will be accepted: Bangladesh's Apostille Convention accession entered into force on 30 March 2025, but HCCH records it as giving rise to objections, and Bangladesh's own government portal notes that countries including France, Germany and the Netherlands have raised concerns. Confirm with the Lithuanian mission and otherwise plan on traditional double legalisation.
Tuition and living costs — the EU's lowest average
These are the published figures, not an agent's quotation. Lithuanian tuition is set per programme by each university, and the official national averages below are the floor, not the ceiling.
- First-year cash estimate: tuition of €1,300–2,300 plus roughly €6,000–8,400 of living costs, plus permit, insurance and flight costs — and separately the ≈ €8,071 you must show but do not spend.
- Cheapest realistic route: a public university in Kaunas or a smaller city with a guaranteed dormitory place; housing is the largest variable in the budget.
- Pay the university only. Application fees go to the institution through its own bank account, and a legitimate file never requires a cash 'processing fee' to an individual.
| What | Verified detail |
|---|---|
| Bachelor tuition | From €1,300 per year — the official national average minimum; humanities and social sciences sit at the low end, IT and engineering higher |
| Master tuition | From €2,300 per year, across roughly 200 English-taught master's programmes |
| PhD tuition | From €8,400 per year — but non-EU students can compete for state-funded PhD places |
| Living costs | Roughly €500–700 per month in Vilnius or Kaunas once accommodation, food and transport are counted — treat this as an estimate, not a quoted price |
| Proof of funds for the permit | About €8,071 for a 12-month stay in 2026 — approximately €576.50 per month plus a one-off return amount, held as a stable bank balance |
| Application fee | Set by each university, paid to the university. Applying yourself costs nothing beyond this, and this site charges no agency fee |

Entry after HSC or a bachelor's — and the deadlines
- After HSC (bachelor's): your school-leaving certificate must be assessed against Lithuanian requirements, known as recognition — it is handled through the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education (SKVC). Allow a month or more for this alone.
- After a bachelor's (master's): a relevant first degree is required, and around 200 English-taught master's programmes exist. PhD study is open to non-EU applicants with state funding available.
- English: IELTS 6.0 or above is the common ask, but many programmes accept a Medium of Instruction letter, with an internal test or interview as the fallback — get any waiver confirmed in writing before you pay for an exam.
- Deadlines: most universities close autumn-semester applications in June, and document recognition is slow, so a realistic Bangladeshi file starts in March or April.
- Documents: passport, SSC and HSC marksheets and certificates, bachelor's transcript and degree (for master's), CV, motivation letter, English scorecard, photographs — plus a criminal-record certificate for the residence-permit file.
- Universities Bangladeshi students commonly consider: Vilnius University, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Vilnius Tech) and Vytautas Magnus University. Listing them is orientation, not a partnership claim.
Bangladesh to Lithuania: the A-to-Z document and visa process
This is the part most agencies skip, and it is the part that decides whether you fly. Read it before you pay anything to anyone.
- 1
Apply to the university directly
Programmes are listed on studyin.lt with their own requirements and their own application form. You apply to the university, not through an agent, and each institution sets its own application fee.
- 2
Legalise your documents — do not rely on an apostille alone
Bangladesh's Apostille Convention accession entered into force on 30 March 2025, but HCCH records it as giving rise to objections (an A** entry) and Bangladesh's own official e-Apostille portal states that countries including France, Germany and the Netherlands have raised concerns. Confirm the current position with the Lithuanian mission before you rely on an apostille. Otherwise plan on traditional double legalisation: verification by the relevant education board, legalisation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, then legalisation by the Lithuanian mission. The final step is frequently completed in person.
- 3
Receive your Letter of Acceptance
Once you are admitted, the university issues the acceptance documents for your permit file and the mediation letter that begins the migration procedure with the Lithuanian authorities.
- 4
Apply for the D visa AND the temporary residence permit before you fly
Both must be held before you enter Lithuania. There is no Lithuanian representation in Bangladesh, so applications go through the Embassy of Lithuania in New Delhi, with VFS Global accepting submissions in India — and because biometrics are given in person, most Bangladeshi applicants first need an Indian visa to travel. Budget weeks and real money for that second process.
- 5
Show stable funds and a clean file
The permit file needs the money you can show (about €8,071 for a 12-month stay), health insurance, accommodation confirmation and your legalised certificates. Keep a stable balance over several months — a sudden large deposit invites refusal.
- 6
Arrive, register, and keep the permit moving
On arrival you complete address registration and collect your residence permit, and you must show academic progress each year to renew it. Start the renewal before the expiry date, never after.
Scholarships, part-time work and staying after graduation
- Scholarships: Lithuanian state scholarships generally cover tuition and living costs, some master's schemes are open to selected non-EU countries, and non-EU students can compete for state-funded PhD places. Universities also award individual merit grants.
- Part-time work: students may work during their studies, subject to conditions set in Lithuanian law — confirm the current terms with the Migration Department and your university before counting that income in your budget.
- After graduation: graduates can apply to renew their temporary residence permit for 12 months in order to look for work. Confirm the current rule and timing with the Migration Department before you plan around it.
- Reality check: Bangladeshi applicants face elevated scrutiny, and Bangladesh's Schengen refusal rate has been among the highest in the world. A consistent, honest file with a stable bank history is the biggest factor you control.
