Ask ten consultancies what studying in India costs and you will get ten answers, usually built around a headline scholarship percentage rather than what a family actually pays across a year. This guide does the arithmetic instead: every cost component priced from verified 2026–27 fee structures across seven universities, converted to taka, then summed into honest year-one totals. If you only have a GPA and a budget, start with our free scholarship calculator — it shows the tier you would realistically be quoted, no signup and no agency fee.
The Five Components of the Real Annual Cost
Every Indian private university bill reduces to five parts. If a quote you receive omits any of them, it is incomplete:
- Tuition after scholarship — the only component scholarships touch
- Hostel and mess — billed separately, paid yearly
- One-time university charges — admission, examination, registration, misc (heavy in year one)
- Visa and travel — cheap by global standards, but real
- Personal and exam running costs — transport, books, data, day-to-day
Component 1: Tuition After Scholarship
Verified 2026–27 listed tuition, with post-scholarship figures where the tier structure is published (approx., 1 INR ≈ 1.4 BDT):
| University | Programme | Listed/year | After scholarship | BDT after (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CGC Landran | B.Tech | INR 1,35,000 | Merit-dependent | ask for your tier in writing |
| Parul University | B.Tech | INR 1,45,000 | Merit-dependent | ask for your tier in writing |
| Chandigarh University | B.Tech | INR 1,60,000 | Merit-dependent | ask for your tier in writing |
| Amity University | B.Tech | INR 1,80,000 | Merit-dependent | ask for your tier in writing |
| NIU | B.Tech | INR 2,06,000 | Merit-dependent | ask for your tier in writing |
| Sharda University | B.Tech CSE | INR 2,95,000 | 20% → 2,36,000 / 50% → 1,47,500 | 3,30,400 / 2,06,500 |
| Sharda University | B.Tech core branches | INR 1,40,000 | 30% → 98,000 | 1,37,200 |
| Galgotias University | B.Tech | INR 3,28,000 | Merit-dependent | ask for your tier in writing |
| Sharda University | MBA | INR 4,25,000 | 50% → 2,12,500 | 2,97,500 |
| Parul University | MBBS | INR 12,00,000 | None (typical) | 16,80,000 |
| Sharda University | MBBS | INR 15,00,000 | None (typical) | 21,00,000 |
Two readings that change plans: the cheapest listed B.Tech is 2.4× cheaper than the most expensive before anyone negotiates a scholarship; and MBBS — the most searched course — sits an order of magnitude above everything else with almost no discount. Full tier tables are in the Sharda scholarship guide and the best-courses comparison.
Component 2: Hostel and Mess
Universities bill accommodation and food separately from tuition — and never apply scholarships to them. From our city-level research in the real living cost breakdown, rent plus food in Greater Noida runs:
- Survival mode: ₹7,500 rent + ₹8,500 food = ₹16,000/month ≈ ₹1.92 lakh/year
- Realistic mode: ₹11,000 rent + ₹10,500 food = ₹21,500/month ≈ ₹2.58 lakh/year
A university hostel with mess usually lands inside this band, but the actual number is university-specific — request the current hostel fee structure with your offer letter, not after you accept it. This is the component where students have the most control, and the one agents quote least.
Component 3: One-Time University Charges
Using Sharda University’s published 2026–27 structure as the worked example (the most completely published of the seven we track; all approx.):
| Charge | Amount | When |
|---|---|---|
| Admission fee | INR 30,000 (≈ BDT 42,000) | One-time, non-refundable, year 1 |
| Examination fee | INR 6,000 per semester | Every semester |
| Registration fee | INR 15,000 | Annual, from year 2 |
| Year-1 miscellaneous | INR 10,000 | Application, AIU equivalence, insurance, medical, FRRO |
| Year 2+ miscellaneous | INR 5,000 | Per year |
That is INR 52,000 in year one before hostel and mess — roughly 35% on top of a discounted B.Tech-Civil tuition of INR 98,000. Other universities publish different structures; whatever they are, demand them in writing. A quote showing only tuition is a marketing document, not a budget.
Component 4: Visa and Travel
India remains the cheapest visa on this site’s comparison table:
- Student visa: free for Bangladeshi nationals under the bilateral agreement + BDT 1,500 IVAC service fee — no blocked bank balance, no maintenance requirement. (Full visa process)
- Flight Dhaka–Delhi: approximately BDT 20,000–40,000 round trip
- Land-border routes from Rangpur/Dinajpur divisions cost a fraction of a flight and run year-round — a real option for students in northern Bangladesh
- Compare that to the upfront cash demanded by European visas: Germany’s €10,332 blocked account, the UK’s 28-day maintenance hold. India’s visa line is essentially rounding error.
Component 5: Personal and Exam Running Costs
Transport, mobile data, books, clothes and day-to-day spending: our survival budget puts non-rent costs at roughly ₹8,100–9,800/month (≈ ₹1–1.2 lakh/year), realistic mode higher when you eat out and travel. Add one home visit per year (the BDT 20,000–40,000 return flight, or far less by bus). Set the monthly allowance with your family before you leave — the students who get into trouble are the ones who never fixed one.
Two Honest Year-One Totals
Profile A — budget engineering route: B.Tech core branches at Sharda with a GPA-3.2 student’s 30% tier:
| Component | INR (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Tuition after 30% | 98,000 |
| One-time charges (year 1) | 52,000 |
| Hostel + mess (realistic, year) | 2,58,000 |
| Visa + IVAC | ≈ 1,600 |
| Travel home (one trip) + setup | 40,000 |
| Personal spending (year) | 1,10,000 |
| Total year 1 | ≈ INR 5,59,600 (≈ BDT 7,83,000) |
Profile B — premium management route: MBA at Sharda with the 50% tier:
| Component | INR (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Tuition after 50% | 2,12,500 |
| One-time charges (year 1) | 52,000 |
| Hostel + mess (realistic, year) | 2,58,000 |
| Visa + IVAC + travel + setup | 41,600 |
| Personal spending (year) | 1,10,000 |
| Total year 1 | ≈ INR 6,74,100 (≈ BDT 9,44,000) |
Both profiles collapse into the same planning truth: tuition is roughly a third to a half of year one, and the scholarship percentage you are shown describes only that fraction. A student who budgets “50% off” as 50% off everything will be short by roughly three lakh taka in year one.
Extending to Four Years
Year two onwards drops the one-time admission charge but adds the INR 15,000 registration — and your scholarship must be re-earned against Sharda’s renewal rules (8.00 CGPA, 75% attendance, no backlogs). Planning on a tier that lapses in year two is how budgets break halfway through a degree.
- Budget engineering route over 4 years: ≈ INR 5.1–5.6 lakh tuition-side + living ≈ BDT 3–4 lakh/year → total roughly BDT 15–22 lakh
- Premium management route over 4 years: MBA is typically 2 years, not 4 — total ≈ BDT 11–13 lakh including living
- MBBS (5.5 years): tuition alone ≈ BDT 92–115 lakh + living — the single biggest financial decision in this space
For the like-for-like destination view — India versus the UK versus Canada with every component included — our India vs Canada vs UK comparison puts India’s four-year total at BDT 15–37 lakh against BDT 73–146 lakh for the Western options. On these numbers India is not a compromise destination; it is the rational first choice for families funding a degree without liquid capital.
How to Get a Quote You Can Actually Trust
- Insist on all five components, itemised, in writing — tuition after your GPA tier, hostel+mess, one-time charges, visa/travel, personal estimate.
- Ask for the university’s own fee page, not a PDF nobody can trace. Every figure on this page maps to a published structure; demand the same of anyone you speak to.
- Separate year one from year two in the quote — one-time charges make year one structurally higher, and that is fine when you know it, dangerous when you do not.
- Pay the university directly with a receipt in its name, and run the whole offer against the agent-scam checklist before any transfer.
- Re-verify in the session you apply — fee structures change annually, and this page’s figures expire like every other number on the internet.
