Choosing where to study abroad is a major decision. Cost is one factor — but not the only one. This guide gives you an honest, like-for-like breakdown of the full 4-year cost for each destination so you can make an informed choice.

4-Year Total Cost Estimate (BDT, approximate)

Cost ItemIndiaCanadaUK
Tuition (4 years)BDT 8–25 lakhBDT 56–84 lakhBDT 42–70 lakh
Living (4 years)BDT 6–10 lakhBDT 28–42 lakhBDT 28–42 lakh
Visa & travelBDT 1–2 lakhBDT 14–20 lakh*BDT 3–5 lakh
4-year totalBDT 15–37 lakhBDT 98–146 lakhBDT 73–117 lakh

*Canada includes the GIC requirement (CAD 20,635 ≈ BDT 15.5 lakh), which is a locked deposit — not a fee, but it must be available upfront.

All figures are approximate. Costs vary significantly by program, city, and lifestyle.

What You Must Have Before You Board

The 4-year totals above are paid over time, but visas and enrolments front-load them. This is the money that must exist — or be documented — before departure:

IndiaCanadaUK (non-London)
Before boarding~BDT 2–4 lakh~BDT 30–41 lakh (incl. GIC)~BDT 15–21 lakh
Shape afterwardsSmall, term-by-term paymentsMonthly transfers on top of the GIC dripMonthly transfers after the 28-day check

Two consequences decide more families than the totals do:

  • The loan conversation starts before the admission letter. Education loans in Bangladesh are sanctioned against collateral and take weeks to months. A disbursement schedule that misses your GIC or tuition deadline is useless — start the file while you are still comparing destinations.
  • The GIC is refunded, not spent — but it must exist. Canada’s CAD 20,635 returns in instalments after arrival; the problem is liquidity, not cost. Money tied up in land or a business cannot be shown on the day the officer checks.

That shape — a small tap in India versus a large lump for Canada or the UK — is often what actually decides the question, long before anyone studies the 4-year totals.

India

Tuition

  • Range: approximately INR 95,000–15,00,000 per year depending on the institution and program
  • SAARC-category fee reductions exist at many universities for students from Bangladesh, Nepal, and other South Asian nations
  • MBBS, engineering, business, and arts programs each have different fee structures — compare directly with your shortlisted institution

Living Costs

  • Survival budget: approximately ₹17,000/month
  • Realistic budget: approximately ₹25,000–27,000/month
  • Annual living cost (realistic): BDT 1.5–2.5 lakh/year

Visa & Travel

  • Student visa: free for Bangladeshis + BDT 1,500 IVAC service fee
  • Return flight Dhaka–Delhi: approximately BDT 20,000–40,000
  • No fixed bank balance required for the visa

Key Considerations

  • No option for legal part-time work during studies
  • FRRO registration required on arrival (within 14 days)
  • Flight home: approximately 2.5–3 hours, BDT 20,000–40,000 round trip

Canada

Tuition

  • Range: approximately CAD 20,000–35,000 per year for most undergraduate programs
  • Medical, law, and some professional programs cost significantly more
  • Scholarships for Bangladeshi students are limited and highly competitive

Living Costs

  • Survival budget: approximately C$1,046–1,166/month
  • Realistic budget: approximately C$1,596–1,726/month
  • Annual living cost (realistic): BDT 10–13 lakh/year

Visa & Financial Requirements

  • Study permit fee: CAD 150 (approx. BDT 11,000)
  • GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate): CAD 20,635 — this is a locked deposit that must be in your account before the visa is issued. It is refunded in instalments after arrival, not a sunk cost, but requires the funds to exist upfront.
  • Proof of funds: the total funds you must demonstrate (tuition + GIC + travel) typically reaches CAD 40,000–55,000 for the first year
  • Return flight: approximately BDT 1,00,000–1,50,000

Key Considerations

  • Legal part-time work: 24 hours/week during term; full-time during holidays
  • Part-time income typically covers 60–80% of living costs — family funding or loans still needed
  • Post-study work pathways exist (PGWP) if you plan to stay in Canada

United Kingdom

Tuition

  • Range: approximately GBP 12,000–25,000 per year for most undergraduate programs
  • Medical programs can exceed GBP 40,000/year

Living Costs

  • Outside London (survival): approximately £782/month
  • Outside London (realistic): approximately £1,019/month
  • London (realistic): approximately £1,390–1,690/month
  • Annual living cost (realistic, non-London): BDT 10–13 lakh/year

Visa & Financial Requirements

  • Student visa fee: GBP 490 (approx. BDT 65,000)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): GBP 776/year — paid upfront at visa application
  • Proof of funds: Must hold tuition + maintenance (GBP 1,136–1,534/month × 9 months) in your bank for 28 consecutive days before applying
  • Return flight: approximately BDT 80,000–1,20,000

Key Considerations

  • Legal part-time work: 20 hours/week during term
  • Post-study Graduate Route visa available (2 years after graduation)
  • TB test required for Bangladeshi applicants before the visa

Return on Investment (ROI)

ROI depends heavily on where you plan to work after graduation.

ScenarioInvestmentExpected starting salaryNotes
India degree, work in BangladeshBDT 15–37 lakhBDT 4–10 lakh/yearPayback: 3–6 years; degree is UGC-recognised

Canada degree, stay in CanadaBDT 98–146 lakhCAD 50,000–70,000/yearStrong ROI if permanent residency obtained

There is no universally “better” option. The right choice depends on your program, career goals, risk tolerance, and family finances.

What Scholarships Actually Change

Be sceptical of any comparison that quietly assumes a scholarship:

  • India — SAARC-category fee reductions at many universities cut 20–50% off tuition, and ICCR, when you win it, takes your family’s outlay close to zero for the years it funds.
  • Canada — entrance scholarships for international students exist, but they rarely cover the gap between international and domestic tuition. Treat them as a reduction, not a solution.
  • UK — course-level bursaries and fee reductions are the commonest form; they shave the total rather than transform it.

The honest summary: only genuinely fully funded routes change the ranking, and there is exactly one fully funded route inside this comparison — India’s ICCR. Everything else is arithmetic on a discount.

Where Each Destination Wins

  • India wins on cash-in-hand today. Lowest total, no blocked funds, a free visa, and the shortest flight home. The right entry point is our Study in India hub — compare individual university fees before choosing a program.
  • Canada wins if you intend to emigrate. The PGWP-to-PR route is the strongest of the three — but only if the family can fund BDT ~1 crore and the student stays. Re-check the current figures in our cheapest-country guide before committing.
  • The UK wins on post-study optionality. The 2-year Graduate Route gives time to find sponsorship without the Canadian funding cliff. See the exact government costs in the UK destination guide.

One number families forget: living costs alone — separate from tuition — follow the same ranking. Our real living-cost breakdown shows monthly survival vs realistic budgets city by city.

The Costs That Grow While You Study

Two line items move during the four years, and neither appears in a first-year quote:

  • Exchange rates. You earn in taka and pay in CAD or GBP. A 10% depreciation of the taka against the Canadian dollar adds a tenth of the total — roughly BDT 10–15 lakh — in pure currency movement, several times what the entire visa-and-travel line of an Indian degree costs. Rupee exposure exists too, but the absolute amounts are an order of magnitude smaller.
  • Tuition increases between years. International fees rise routinely; a program costed at year-one rates is costed optimistically. Ask each institution what its international fee increases have been over the last three years — that answer compounds as surely as interest.

Neither point changes the ranking. Both widen the gap: the expensive destinations get more expensive faster.

Things to Compare Before Deciding

Before committing, get answers to these specific questions from each institution you are considering:

  1. What is the exact annual tuition for my program?
  2. Are any scholarships or fee reductions available for Bangladeshi nationals?
  3. What are the post-study work rights in this country?
  4. What is the realistic living cost in the specific city where the campus is located?
  5. Is the degree recognised by relevant bodies in Bangladesh and your target career country?

All costs are approximate and based on 2026 data. Currency conversions fluctuate. Verify current fee structures directly with your chosen institutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much cheaper is studying in India than Canada or the UK over 4 years?
The full 4-year cost in India is roughly BDT 15–37 lakh, versus BDT 98–146 lakh in Canada and BDT 73–117 lakh in the UK. India is therefore about 3–6× cheaper than Canada and 2–4× cheaper than the UK when tuition, living, visa and travel are all included.
Why is Canada so much more expensive?
Two reasons dominate: tuition of CAD 20,000–35,000 per year (BDT 56–84 lakh over 4 years) and the GIC requirement — a locked deposit of CAD 20,635 (about BDT 15.5 lakh) that must exist in your account before the visa is issued, plus proof of first-year funds typically reaching CAD 40,000–55,000.
Is the cheapest option always the best value?
No. ROI depends on where you plan to work after graduation. An India degree costs the least and pays back fastest if you return to Bangladesh (3–6 years); a Canadian degree pays back well only if you stay in Canada with permanent residency. If you return to Bangladesh after a Canadian degree, the payback period is long.
Can part-time work close the cost gap between these countries?
Not fully. India permits no legal part-time work during studies; the UK allows 20 hours/week and Canada 24 hours/week during term, which typically covers 60–80% of living costs in Canada but leaves a typical monthly deficit of C$300–600 (Canada) or £200–400 (UK). Family funding or loans are still required.
Which country has the easiest student visa for Bangladeshis?
India: the student visa is free for Bangladeshi nationals with only a BDT 1,500 IVAC fee and no fixed bank-balance requirement. The UK requires GBP 490 plus 9 months of maintenance held for 28 consecutive days; Canada requires CAD 150 plus the GIC and proof of funds.
